The Building Blocks of Creation

The Pancha Mahabhuta, five great elements, form the foundation of Hindu cosmology. Earth, water, fire, air, and ether are fundamental principles of consciousness and energy from which the universe manifests. Earth represents solidity and form. Water represents fluidity and emotion. Fire represents transformation and energy. Air represents movement and life force. Ether represents space and potentiality.

Elements and the Body

Ayurveda uses the five elements to understand the body. Vata dosha, composed of air and ether, governs movement. Pitta dosha, composed of fire and water, governs metabolism. Kapha dosha, composed of earth and water, governs structure. Health is balance of these elements.

Elements and Yoga

The five elements correspond to five lower chakras. Root chakra corresponds to earth. Sacral chakra to water. Solar plexus to fire. Heart to air. Throat to ether. Specific asanas, pranayama, and meditations balance each element. Earth-balancing practices include standing poses. Water-balancing includes flowing movements. Fire-balancing includes heating pranayama.

The five great elements are the foundation of all existence. From them, the universe is born. - Taittiriya Upanishad

Environmental Implications

Pollution of the elements is a spiritual problem. The environmental crisis is a crisis of elemental balance. Hindu environmentalism calls for restoration of balance through respectful resource use and purification of polluted elements.
