The Alvars of Tamil Nadu

The Alvars (meaning 'those who are immersed in God') were twelve Vaishnava saint-poets who lived in Tamil Nadu between the 7th and 9th centuries CE. They were from diverse social backgrounds including a king, a chieftain, a Brahmin, a woman, and a low-caste devotee. Their passionate hymns of love for Vishnu are collected in the Divya Prabandham.

The Divya Prabandham

The Divya Prabandham ('Divine Collection') contains 4,000 hymns composed by the Alvars. These hymns are sung in Sri Vaishnava temples alongside the Vedas. The most prominent Alvars include Nammalvar, Andal, Kulasekhara, and Tirumangai Alvar.

Nammalvar is considered the greatest of the Alvars, composing the Tiruvaimozhi, a masterpiece of devotional poetry. Andal was the only woman among the Alvars, known for her passionate love poetry addressed to Lord Ranganatha. Her Tiruppavai is sung during the month of Margazhi.
